2007 National Amateur Championship
Proposal

The 2007 National Amateur Championship will begin on Monday, December 3rd and continue until conclusion. One day prior to the beginning of the championship, a meeting of the delegates will be held at the trial headquarters.

The NAC committee is comprised of Daryl Johnson as Chairman and Bob Childs as Field Trial Chairman. The remainder of the members are to be announced. Dan Hale is the gun captain with Mike Jew as co-captain.

The grounds are on a 5,000 acre area maintained in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) located in Mansfield, Washington.

The headquarters are in the Best Western Inn in Lake Chelan, Washington. This hotel provides 95 rooms or suites and facilities for meetings.

The birds will be sourced from Ron Wells of Bend, OR. These birds have been used in the past for regional trials with excellent results. David Johnson is the game steward and will be responsible for acquiring birds and organizing the planting.

The Committee

Daryl Johnson, General Chair

Daryl has been around Springer Spaniels for over 20 years. His first mentor in training of these dogs was John McComb whom some may remember from the sport in the seventies. Daryl currently runs two dogs and has a young puppy.
Daryl retired in 2006 from a 37-year profession in the computer software industry where he managed teams and efforts supporting large, multi-million dollar projects for utilities and industries.

Bob Child, Field Trial Chair
Bob has organized four National Championships in the western region and has been in the sport for many years. He has earned champion titles for many dogs and is a respected judge, training, and trialer.

Danny Hale – Gun Captain
Mike Jew – Co-Gun Captain

The Grounds

Description
The 5,000 acres of privately owned CRP grounds are comprised of a variety of natural landscapes and planted and natural cover. There are areas with light tree growth and gullies, flat grasslands, and brushy cover. This property has been in CRP for eight years and has been seeded with Sherman Big Blue Bunchgrass, Alkar Tall Wheat Grass, and Pubescent Tall Wheat Grass. The fall cover runs between 20 and 26 inches tall and taller around the springs, creeks, and ponds.
There is also some natural sage, tumble weed, and other scrubs.

The picture below was taken during early fall and shows the height of the grasses.

Access
The area is fairly remote but has good, county maintained roads both paved and graveled so getting close to courses should be straightforward.

There are no legal restrictions regarding access to and on the grounds and the land owner is amenable for using motorized vehicles for transportation as needed. However, to reduce the impact of motorized vehicles on the grounds, there will only be vehicles used for the trial as shuttles and necessary equipment and supplies allowed on the courses. No personal ATV’s or other motorized vehicles will be allowed.

Weather and climate
This area is generally dry and cool during the beginning of December. The humidity, however, is relatively high (between 80% and 92%) so the scenting should be good.
Conversations with the Chelan Chamber of Commerce indicates that the average high temperature in December is in the 40’s with average lows in the 20’s. There was no snowfall during December in 2005. In 2006 there was initial snow fall around Thanksgiving that melted and didn’t return until after Christmas.

The Birds

Ron Wells of Bend, Oregon, supplied birds for the NWESSC spring trial in 2005. These were exceptionally good birds that are smallish and fast. They fly up and out quickly.

Price for birds is $8.00 for hens, $11.00 for roosters, plus cost of fuel to transport. Ron Wells will bring the birds to Mansfield in three trips to assure their strength and freshness.

Dan Hale is the gun captain. Co-captain is Mike Jew from Western Washington club.
